About Birds and Serpents
Cast Bronze, 2004
30" x 15" x 28"
This piece was inspired by a natural phenomenon I witnessed in my backyard. I heard the fluttering wings and loud calls of a bird. I wondered what all the commotion was about, and then I saw a snake at the bottom of a tree, edging his way toward young nestlings who had hatched just days before. The predator and prey syndrome, played out before my eyes again, is still one of my strongest subject concerns. This is a depiction of a socially dominant character, who, through his social status and power, can dramatically alter the life of a so-called weaker being.
